About
Who are we
The Shirley Community Hub (SCH) is a vibrant central space, open to all sections of our diverse community in Shirley and the Shurblands Estate. The centre acts as a multi-use facility that supports the needs of all sections and age groups of the community. SCH hosts recurring weekly sessions from several local voluntary and community sector partners, who provide a greater focus on community enablement (see Our Partners page). From youth clubs, to Shirley Guides and Brownies, weekly religious worship to social welfare community connects, it all happens at SCH! The facilities are also available to hire, and act as a perfect venue for weddings, children's parties as well as social gatherings and religious worship (see Our Facilities page).
The Shirley Community Hub is run by the Shirley Muslim Association (SMA), which is a faith-based community focused organisation, run entirely by volunteer residents of Shirley. The SMA was formed in 2015 and has been operating as a formally constituted Charity Incorporated Organisation since 2018 (registration no. 1178467). We exist to unite and elevate the community of Shirley, with a particular focus on the underserved and under-represented demographic based in the Shrublands Estate. Our core purpose aligns to fostering cohesion, eradicating social inequality and poverty alleviation for the long term, which are fundamental faith-based injunctions and naturally synergistic with work for the betterment of our community. Our successes to date have largely been delivered organically by engaging large parts of the more affluent residents, selling them a clear vision of what we want to achieve and leveraging their inherent skills and resources for the benefit of the wider community (both financial and non-financial).
“I taught a class here. The centre is clean and nice and has good facilities. The real star of this organisation, however, is the staff. The staff are extremely dedicated and genuinely care about being an important part of the community. A valuable asset to the local community.”
